Dennis Severs came to Spitalfields in 1979 and bought a derelict house saved by the Spitalfields Trust. He reconfigured it to tell the story of an imaginary Huguenot family who had lived there since it was built in 1724.

Dennis moved into 18 Folgate Street with a candle, a chamber pot and a bedroll – and the house became his life’s work.

Drawing upon recordings and writings by Dennis Severs, The Gentle Author has reinvented Dennis Severs’ Tour as a play performed by an actor.

Dennis arranged each room as a scene in a fictional family drama, inspired by the shadows of the past he imagined within the house. For aficionados, this is an opportunity to return and discover Dennis Severs’ creation anew.

The play lasts for approximately 80 minutes followed by a short Q&A

The house is open to visitors by booking online.

Dennis Severs’ House is available for private hire.
